Comprehensive Examination Battery
The Comprehensive Examination Battery (CEB) is FPSI’s most robust entry-level firefighter exam, designed to measure not only the academic skills associated with job success but also the interpersonal traits essential for today’s fire service. Beyond evaluating cognitive ability, reading ability, and critical personal characteristics, the CEB ensures departments select candidates who can thrive in the station environment, represent their department with professionalism, and deliver exceptional service to the community.
To further strengthen the hiring process, the Practical Skills Test (PST) can be added to the CEB. The PST evaluates mechanical aptitude and spatial orientation skills, providing departments with additional assurance that candidates possess the practical, hands-on abilities required for success on the job.
Developed in collaboration with over 200 fire departments nationwide, the CEB—with or without the PST—offers a comprehensive and reliable method for predicting entry-level firefighter success.
The CEB/PST is available in both online and paper-and-pencil formats, providing flexibility for every department’s testing needs.
