National Fire Select Test
The National Fire Select Test (NFST) is one of FPSI’s most trusted entry-level firefighter exams, offering a balanced approach that evaluates both the cognitive skills required for technical performance and the human relations and personality traits essential for working with the public and fellow firefighters.
What sets the NFST apart is its unique weighting: 45% cognitive measures and 55% human relations and personality skills. This ensures agencies select candidates who are not only capable of handling the intellectual demands of the job but also equipped to serve their communities with professionalism, empathy, and teamwork.
The NFST is backed by both content validity and criterion-related validity, giving departments confidence that the exam predicts on-the-job success. In addition, it incorporates FPSI’s proven personality component, further enhancing its ability to identify candidates who can thrive in the fire service.
The NFST is available in paper-and-pencil format and requires that FPSI provides the scoring.
